Itinerary
DAY 1
ERRACHIDIA – ZIZ VALLEY – ERFOUD – MERZOUGA
Errachidia Airport, or another agreed location in the city, will be the starting point of this 5-day desert journey. This is an ideal starting point, as the route to Merzouga, one of the gateways to the Moroccan Sahara, is shorter from here than from many other cities. After meeting your driver, we will head south through the spectacular Ziz Valley to begin our journey. On the way, we will pass through Erfoud, a town famous for the important dinosaur fossils discovered in the area. Its underground deposits are also rich in a wide variety of minerals. Throughout the city, fossils, minerals and its famous dates are among the main attractions. Dates are also celebrated during an annual festival held in October. Shortly afterwards, we will arrive in Merzouga, where you will check in at the charming kasbah-style hotel reserved for you. With an authentic Berber atmosphere and all the comforts you need, it is located at the foot of the dunes and close to the desert tracks that we will explore over the following days.
DAY 2
MERZOUGA – KHAMLIA – NOMADIC FAMILY VISIT – ERG CHEBBI DUNES
If you choose this tour from Errachidia to the desert with Marrakech as the final destination, you will probably do so because it dedicates two days to discovering the deepest and most fascinating part of the Sahara. Today is one of those unforgettable days, combining extraordinary landscapes with authentic cultural experiences. One of the highlights is a visit to the village of Khamlia, locally known as the “Black Village”. Most of its inhabitants are of sub-Saharan origin, having settled here centuries ago. Their ancestors were brought through the ancient caravan routes of the Sahara, while preserving their cultural traditions. The best expression of this heritage is Gnawa music, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Its powerful rhythms and percussion have strong roots in traditional African music, which you will experience during a live performance. Another highlight of the day will be a visit to a nomadic or semi-nomadic family who, despite the harshness of the environment, have chosen to continue living in this remote part of the desert. They preserve many of the traditions of their ancestors, whose lives were based on nomadic activities such as herding. Over a cup of traditional Moroccan tea, we will meet the family, learn about their way of life and enjoy their genuine hospitality — a wonderful experience far removed from mass tourism. Between these visits, we will travel along endless desert tracks that were once used by the famous Paris-Dakar Rally. These historic routes pass abandoned kohl mines as well as the remains of former Berber and French settlements dating back to the Protectorate period. We will also stop at an elevated viewpoint to admire the immense beauty of the Erg Chebbi dunes. At the end of the day, we will head into the dunes not by 4×4, but by camel. Riding across the fine golden sand, shaped by the wind into beautiful waves, we will reach the heart of this magnificent sea of dunes. There, our desert camp will be waiting for us. You will enjoy dinner and spend the night in traditional tents, surrounded by the peaceful silence of the Sahara and beneath an unforgettable sky full of stars.
DAY 3
ERG CHEBBI DUNES – TODRA GORGES – DADES VALLEY
The third day of the tour begins in the desert. For many travelers, watching the sunrise over the Sahara after spending the night among the dunes is one of the most memorable experiences of their journey through Morocco. After breakfast at the desert camp, we will return to Merzouga by camel before continuing our journey towards the Todra Gorges. The Dades Valley forms part of Morocco’s famous Route of a Thousand Kasbahs. Along the way, we will reach the Todra Gorges, where the Todra River has carved its way through the rock over thousands of years, creating a spectacular canyon with narrow passages and towering vertical cliffs. The area is perfect for a short walk and is also internationally renowned for rock climbing. After visiting the gorges, we will return to the road and continue through the Dades Valley, surrounded by picturesque villages, traditional adobe kasbahs and palm groves. In one of the local villages, we will stop for the evening and check in at a charming riad, where dinner and an overnight stay will be provided.
DAY 4
DADES VALLEY – VALLEY OF THE ROSES – OUARZAZATE – HIGH ATLAS – MARRAKECH
During the morning of the fourth day, we will continue exploring the Dades Valley, with a special focus on the Valley of the Roses. The valley is named after the many rose bushes that grow throughout the area. Like Erfoud, it also hosts an annual festival, in this case dedicated to the rose harvest in spring. Shortly afterwards, we will arrive in Ouarzazate, internationally known for its Atlas Studios, where scenes from major films such as Lawrence of Arabia have been filmed. Our attention will then turn to the Taourirt Kasbah, one of the finest examples of this type of traditional architecture. Built from adobe, as is typical of southern Moroccan and Berber architecture, its imposing appearance reflects its former defensive role. It was once a stronghold of the powerful El Glaoui family during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Inside, however, its beautiful and delicate decoration reveals that it was also an elegant residence, designed according to traditional Islamic architectural principles. The road awaits us once again as we ascend through the High Atlas Mountains towards the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The panoramic views along the way deserve a stop for photographs, as the surrounding landscape offers spectacular views of the highest mountains of Morocco and North Africa. After crossing the pass, we will descend through the valleys on the northern side of the Atlas Mountains, passing small villages built into the mountain slopes and traditional farms where local communities continue to raise livestock. Upon arrival in Marrakech, you will check in at your centrally located riad and enjoy some free time at the end of the day. You can use this time to taste Moroccan cuisine and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the historic center, including the famous Jemaa el-Fna Square, which comes alive every evening.
DAY 5
MARRAKECH
This 5-day tour from Errachidia to the desert and Marrakech comes to an end in the Red City. If your flight schedule allows, you can enjoy another walk through Marrakech, complete your shopping or discover new corners of the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the agreed time, we will pick you up and provide a private transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport, where you will begin your journey home. We will say goodbye at the airport and hope to welcome you again on another unforgettable journey through Morocco with AL ATLAS TOURS.
